Hi there
When not crusading against crime or helping old ladies cross the street, Library Ninja is happy to be participating in the Western Australia Public Libraries - Learning 2.0 Basics training program.
After meditating upon the ancient (well, 20 year old) art form of blogging, Library Ninja has come up with the following thoughts.
Pros
Blogs are easy to set up, not requiring much technical knowledge or experience. As such, everyone from little Timmy who wants to write about his pet cat to old Johnny who wants to write about his steam engine collection can have a blog up and running in little to no time.
Cons
Since blogs are often provided for free and are also relatively easy to set up, the internet is now teeming with millions of blogs. And because there are so many bloggers out there, it's rather difficult to find quality blogs, with the large majority providing information that can be classified somewhere between useless and extremely-useless! In a sense blogs have done to the internet what Public Access TV did to television (remember Wayne's World anybody? Party time! Excellent! ...err, NOT!).
Well we already knew there was a lot of useless crap out there! So we can now add ours to it! YAY
ReplyDeleteBut if you continue to sieve through the crap, you do find some gems of a Blog. Hopefully some of the Blogs that are created as part of this training are partly gems.
ReplyDeleteIf the crap is entertaining, then it does serve some value I think!
ReplyDeleteI agree with LJS. I think all blogs serve a purpose.
ReplyDeleteDoes it really matter if the blogs are crap or seemingly pointless? The purpose of a blog doesn't necessarily have to be to entertain or to inform - it can be a way for someone to practice their writing, a way of being creative through choosing the template design and adding tweaks, or like many of the people doing this training, it is a way to learn new Web 2.0 skills and to put them into practice :)
But like you say, the quantity of blogs out there can make it difficult to find something that is especially interesting to the reader.
I like your post, and love what you've done with the blog title font and image!
I'm just heartbroken that Wayne's World has been vilified in such a heinous manner. I've based at least 60% of my life on lessons learned from that movie. The other 40% from Wayne's World 2. Before we know it this blog will be ridiculing Jean-Claude Van Damme's acting ability.
ReplyDeleteThe old adage of "one person's crap is another person's treasure" has never been so accurate as in the land of the Web.
ReplyDeleteYou name any micro-sub-group of an interest or a hobby and there are blogs or flickr groups or use.net groups about it. Just don't invoke Rule 34. (Don't google that at work either).
So I would say that there are a lot of blogs out there that may be of interest to just a small group - is that really such a bad thing?
Claude Van Damme had acting ability?
ReplyDeleteYour blog site is super, funny and interesting, it has inspired me to try and jazz mine up a bit. I,m not a social networking type person & do find it all a bit tedious and time consuming but really enjoy your comments!!
